“Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck.” George Carlin
Carlin or Self Righteousness: What Truly Offends You the Most?
Offense (etiquette) can be defined as a word or action which causes someone emotional hurt, or otherwise can inflame an individual. Offense is often a very relative concept, since the feeling of offense often is dependent upon one's personal values. (Wikipedia)
Judgmental attitudes and pious ignorance have often times blinded many Christians perspective of truth and life. Men since the beginning of time have asked or pondered all the questions concerning truth, life and their own existence. These questions were never meant to be black and white in their conclusions. Life is fuzzy at best and grey area’s abound in all the issue’s we think most important. Offenses come in many forms but truth has only one meaning. Truth is the DNA code of God.
For the average Christian it comes down to White you’re saved, black you’re lost. Thus we define what’s right and wrong the same way. Either your good as defined by societies moral standards or you are of the evil one. There can be no grey area’s. Either you are a Christian or you are a George Carlin. Either you’re saved or your lost. Now how offensive is this type of thinking on any level?
Does a man like George Carlin offend me? Absolutely not in spite of my Christianity. If Carlin’s life had any bearing on the gospel message that would be a different story for me. The gospel message as I understand it was one of good news. News that told a story about how God sent His Son to reconcile the world or mankind back to Himself. What Adam did in the garden through his disobedience, the cross of Jesus Christ erased in it’s grace and mercy. So where exactly does the offense of any man fit into this picture today? Maybe the one true offense to God is underestimating the power of His cross that saves.
Personally, I’m still searching this truth out to all its conclusions no matter where that may lead me. The covenant pattern found in the Scripture governs my beliefs yet if through one man’s (Jesus) righteous act the free gift of justification came was not just offered to all men then....alright I promise I won’t go there in order not to offend anyone.
If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. George Carlin
Has God aimed so low in the creation of His universe that we are all that exist's on this tiny blue dot in all the cosmos? A Christian didn’t ask this question. No matter what your definition of a heathen may be, an unbelieving comedian asked this of his fellow man. So what exactly are the right questions we need to ask that will make all our journeys complete? That’s just it. We’ll never know all the answers. And in not knowing all the answers, men such as George Carlin will always have a place amongst us royal recipients in God’s final purpose in the cross for all mankind.
The only true question becomes one of cause and affect. For what cause did God send His only Son to this earth and to what affect did it bring to God’s final conclusion for all of us? In these two questions alone are all the issue’s in life contained. I guess we’ll never know until we close our eye’s here for the last time. The true offense found in this world is presuming to know the answer’s to what awaits us at our journeys end if only God can know that answer.
Truth is surely your enemy if your world is black and white or absolutes define your right or wrong. Love, grace and mercy are the only absolutes that color any truth to be found. So I ask you again, what truly offends you the most? Men such as George Carlin, this post or the deep unanswered, thought provoking questions you’ll never really know until you meet your maker? Any offense that comes your way is yours alone to define. Offense is a word that should be removed from your dictionary if you call all men your equal in terms grace and mercy, both believer and nonbeliever alike.
It wasn’t our cross that held us to this standard but the cross that God scourged or cleansed this earth with His own Son upon it, that sets all the standards for any truth. God alone defines truth no matter who might take offense.
